Denver is the best non-Northeast heat pump market, but for a different reason than Maine. Colorado’s advantage is the incentive structure, not a dramatic operating cost saving. Anyone considering a project here should understand that distinction before they sign.
Colorado natural gas is cheap. At around $11.92 per Mcf, it is among the least expensive residential gas in the country. Electricity is moderate at 17.13 cents per kilowatt hour.
Run both through the heat pump model and the result is uncomfortable for the pure operating cost argument. Gas at $11.92 per Mcf through a 90 percent furnace delivers heat at roughly $13 per million BTU. A cold-climate heat pump on Colorado electricity delivers the same heat at roughly $15 per million BTU after duct losses.
In other words, in Denver, the gas furnace is usually cheaper to run than the heat pump. Our furnace comparison shows Colorado in the contested range, closer than most of New England.
This is not a reason to avoid a heat pump in Denver. It is a reason to be honest about why you are doing it.
Three reasons, and they are all real.
The incentive stack. Colorado has one of the most stackable sets of programs in the country. Xcel Energy pays a utility rebate. Colorado HEAR pays up to $8,000 for cold-climate equipment. The state tax credit adds roughly $1,000 per four tons installed. The Denver-region Power Ahead rebate adds $1,500 for qualifying equipment. The Xcel page covers the mechanics.
Cooling. Denver summers are hot enough that a heat pump replacing an air conditioner changes the comparison entirely. If the AC is at end of life, the alternative is a furnace plus an AC, and the heat pump competes against that combined cost.
Cold-climate policy alignment. Colorado’s HEAR program paying $8,000 for cold-climate equipment versus $3,000 for standard is a rare case where the incentive rewards the technically correct choice. A standard heat pump in a 5,514 degree day climate will run backup heat in January. The program pays you to specify the right machine.
Cold-climate equipment, for the reason above. Denver is not a severe climate by Maine standards, but it is a genuine winter, and the state program’s differential is a strong signal about what actually works here.
Get the electrical question answered early. Denver’s housing stock is newer on average than Boston’s, so panel issues are somewhat less common, but the same load calculation logic applies.
Confirm your contractor’s registration for the state tax credit first, because that is the easiest benefit to lose and it costs you nothing to verify. Then determine which HEAR tier you qualify for, since the income gate is the difference between $3,000 and $8,000. Then check the Xcel equipment tiers against your specific equipment selection.
