For a household on electric resistance hot water, this is often the highest-return efficiency upgrade available. For a household on cheap natural gas, it frequently is not. The difference is your rates.

The short answer

A heat pump water heater, installed, costs about $1,800 to $5,200 for a 50 to 80 gallon unit. The equipment is $1,200 to $3,000 of that. The rest is labor, permit, and whatever the installation site demands in terms of condensate handling, air volume and a possible new circuit.

It is one of the few energy upgrades with a genuinely short payback, but only if you are replacing electric resistance or propane. Against cheap natural gas, the honest answer is that it usually does not pay back inside the equipment's life. This page shows both cases rather than only the flattering one.

The installation constraint nobody mentions first

It needs air, and it needs somewhere for the condensate to go.

A heat pump water heater absorbs heat from the air around it, so it needs a large enough volume of air to draw from, typically several hundred cubic feet. A small closed closet will not work without ducting, which adds cost and complexity. A basement, garage or utility room usually does.

It also produces condensate, which has to drain somewhere, and it cools and dehumidifies the space around it. In a humid basement that is a benefit. In a closet adjacent to living space it can make the room noticeably cool. Check both before you buy.

Electrical requirements

Often simpler than a heat pump installation, but not always free.

  • Replacing an electric resistance tank: usually a straight swap on the existing 240 volt circuit, because the heat pump draws less current than the elements it replaces.
  • Replacing a gas tank: you need a circuit that may not exist. A new 240 volt run is typically $350 to $1,200 depending on distance and panel capacity.
  • 120 volt plug-in units: a newer category that runs on an ordinary outlet, avoiding the circuit work entirely. The trade-off is slower recovery, which matters for larger households.

Rebates and incentives

Heat pump water heaters appear explicitly in many state and utility programs, and they are frequently among the better-funded measures because efficiency programs can verify them easily. Some programs stack a utility rebate with a state program.

The federal 25C credit, which covered these units through 2025, is no longer available for equipment installed in 2026. Several pages have not caught up with that, including some government pages. Current program status is tracked on the rebates hub.
