How to read our numbers, and how the site makes money. The two are kept strictly separate.

Written by HeatPumpAtlasUSA Editorial Updated How we calculate this

Estimates, not quotes

Every cost figure on HeatPumpAtlasUSA is a modelled estimate. Installed costs are regional ranges built from published pricing, and operating costs come from federal energy and climate data applied to a physics-based model. Two contractors bidding the same job routinely differ by 30 percent or more, and real utility tariffs are more complex than a state average. Treat our numbers as a way to understand the economics and pressure-test a quote, not as a bid.

Rebate accuracy

We hand-verify a short list of rebate programs and record a status for each. Programs fund out and get paused during the year, and eligibility rules are detailed. Only programs we mark as open are counted in an after-rebate total. Always confirm the current amount and your eligibility with the administering program before you rely on it. See the methodology for how we verify.

Not professional advice

The site does not provide engineering, financial, tax or legal advice. Equipment sizing needs a load calculation, electrical work needs a licensed electrician, and rebate and tax questions need the relevant program or a qualified advisor for your situation.

How we make money, and how we keep it separate

HeatPumpAtlasUSA may earn revenue through installer referrals when you request quotes, and some outbound links may be affiliate links. That is how a free, ad-light reference site sustains itself. It does not change anything you read:

  • The model uses the same public data and the same code regardless of any partner.
  • We publish the cases where a heat pump is the wrong financial choice, including where staying put is cheaper.
  • Rebate status reflects whether a program is actually open, never whether it benefits us.

If we ever cannot keep a recommendation independent of a commercial relationship, we will not publish it.

External sources and images

We cite public data from sources including the EIA, NOAA and the US Census, and we do not control those sites. Placeholder photography is used under its respective license with attribution. Full source details are on the methodology page.
