The choice between ducted and ductless usually comes down to one question: do you already have ducts, and are they any good? If yes, a ducted heat pump is typically cheaper and less visible. If no, a ductless mini split avoids the several thousand dollars it costs to add duct work to an existing house. The house tends to make the decision for you.

What each one is

A ducted heat pump connects to a central air handler and distributes heat and cooling through ductwork, the same way a central furnace and AC do. From inside the house it looks and feels like conventional central air.

A ductless mini split skips the ducts. An outdoor unit connects by a small refrigerant line to one or more indoor heads mounted in the rooms you want to condition. Each head is its own zone with its own control.
