Usually when you heat with oil, propane or electric resistance. Against cheap natural gas a furnace can still win on the monthly bill. Do heat pumps work in cold weather?
Yes. A modern cold-climate heat pump keeps producing useful heat well below zero Fahrenheit. Capacity and efficiency fall as it gets colder, which is why sizing and backup heat matter. The machine does not shut off at freezing the way older units did.
What size heat pump do I need?
A Manual J load calculation for your house, not a tons-per-square-foot rule. Climate, insulation, air leakage and the design temperature all move the number. A typical 1,800 to 2,200 square foot home often lands between 2 and 4 tons, but treating that as a spec is how systems get oversized.
Do I need a panel upgrade for a heat pump?
Not always. A load calculation against your service and appliances decides it. A single-zone mini split on a 200 amp panel with spare capacity usually fits. A whole-home ducted system with electric backup on a 100 amp service that already feeds an electric range and dryer often does not.
Will a heat pump raise my electric bill?
Yes. A heat pump runs on electricity, so the electric bill rises. The useful question is the combined bill: electricity plus the fuel you no longer burn. Against oil, propane or electric resistance the combined bill usually falls. Against cheap natural gas it can go either way.
